The transformation of the Oak Hammock Marsh Wetland Discovery Centre is being executed in stages. Here is an interesting story of one area that has been transformed and played a pivotal role during the upgrades and updates of the Wetland Discovery Centre.
Our theatre was the first one to receive a facelift and an upgrade. While the old theatre was functional, it was definitely showing its age, both visually and technologically. It had been in used since our grand opening in 1993 and had received very few improvements since.
Starting in early 2023, the theatre ceiling was gutted. Old wiring and cables were removed and recycled while new wiring for our new projection system and advanced lighting technology were installed. We opted to keep the existing seats as they were still in great condition and quite comfortable.
By spring 2023, our new state-of-the art theatre had a new screen, new curtains, new podiums and a total of 4 projectors providing a truly multimedia and immersive experience for our visitors. This was a great step in upgrading our spaces and transforming the Centre into a new destination not only as a Discovery Centre but also as an Event Centre.
Little did we know that the newly refurbished space would be used a few months later as a storage area for our collection during the major renovation project for the rest of the Wetland Discovery Centre! The theatre provided a great isolated space for these specimens as they were well protected from temperature changes, light and and dust. As an added bonus, they didn’t have to travel very far. They are currently making their way back to the exhibits to add the final touches as they are completed.
While the majority of our specimens will find a new home in the Wall of Species exhibit, located in the Morrison Wetland Hall, some will be used in a variety of other new and exciting spaces throughout the Wetland Discovery Centre.
