The Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh is already known for its excellent environmental education programs and conservation efforts. Updating our virtual education programs will allow us to continue to engage students, educators, and nature enthusiasts who can’t visit in person.
Since the COVID19 pandemic, many of our programs have been offered remotely, thanks to technology and the ability to convert our hands-on programs into virtual experiences.
In the past, our nature interpreters would travel to the rural schools of Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan and present our educational programs in the classrooms. Virtual sessions significantly reduce the expenses associated with in-person events, such as travel, food, and hotel costs. For participants, joining a program online is often far more affordable and convenient, allowing them to learn from their own or classrooms.
During the closure of the Centre for renovations, we had to move the virtual studio to a new location in an office space in Stonewall. This has allowed us to continue offering our programs uninterrupted. The flexibility of virtual programming is unmatched. Sessions can be scheduled to suit different time zones and participant needs, making them highly convenient for schools. Thanks to our virtual studio, we have been able to expand our reach into several provinces.
Additionally, virtual platforms enable the integration of innovative tools, such as live-streamed wildlife footage, 3D tours, and interactive elements like quizzes or polls, which enhance engagement and make learning more dynamic.
Another noteworthy advantage is scalability. Virtual programs can reach much larger audiences without the constraints of physical space. They can also be recorded and reused, extending their educational value and making them a resource that keeps on giving. This eco-friendly approach aligns perfectly with conservation goals, as it reduces the carbon footprint associated with traditional events and travel.
Virtual programming meets the needs of modern learners. Tech-savvy audiences often find interactive and digital content more engaging, and the ability to tailor programs for different age groups or educational levels further adds to its appeal. These programs not only inspire learning but also foster a deeper connection to the subject matter, making them a powerful tool for education and outreach.
While the studio at the Wetland Discovery is not completed (image above), we are still able to deliver programs to classrooms across the country. Do not hesitate to contact us for your Wetland Education needs!
